The effect of xenon inhalation on the hemostasis system and liver function of laboratory animals during the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome

Abstract

Xenon, being an inert gas, does not form chemical bonds with proteins and has a complex effect on the organs and systems of the body through biophysical processes. The hemostasis system and liver function were studied in view of the fact that all enzymes of the procoagulant pathway, being serine proteases, are synthesized mainly in the liver in the form of inactive proenzymes and circulate in the blood in this form. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of inhaled xenon-oxygen mixtures on hemostasis system and liver function in rats with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Material and methods. 75 female outbred rats were used in the experiment. Under general anesthesia, ARDS was modeled by intratracheal administration of a solution of hydrochloric acid with pepsin, adjusted to pH 1.2. Correction of the induced effects was performed by inhalation of a Xe/O2 mixture at a ratio of 70 % / 30 %. Hemostatic parameters (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen, antithrombin III concentration), as well as biochemical parameters (activity of aspartate and alanine aminotransferases, lactate dehydrogenase, triglyceride, C-reactive protein content) were measured.
Results. The use of an inhalation mixture of Xe/O2 in the context of ARDS leads to an increase in coagulation hemostasis parameters (prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time), normalization of antithrombin III content compared to the ARDS group, as well as to decrease of biochemical to control values.
Conclusions. The conducted experimental study showed a positive effect of Xe/O2 inhalations on the studied vital parameters of the body during the development of ARDS.
